A Landmark Day for the City of Derry Triathlon
Saturday 5 September 2026 marked a memorable return for the City of Derry Triathlon, as international elite racing, junior competition and a sold-out Age Group field came together for a full day of racing in the heart of the city.
For the first time since 2017, triathlon returned to Derry with an international programme featuring the Europe Triathlon Cup — City of Derry 2026, the Europe Triathlon Junior Cup — City of Derry 2026, and the Triathlon National Series — City of Derry Triathlon 2026.
With racing centred around the River Foyle, the quays, Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square, athletes competed on a compact city-centre course surrounded by supporters, volunteers and spectators throughout the day.
International Racing in the Heart of Derry
Junior athletes opened the international programme in the morning, with New Zealand’s Caleb Wagener taking victory in the Junior Men’s race and Hungary’s Korinna Katona winning the Junior Women’s event.
Attention then turned to the senior Europe Triathlon Cup races later in the day.
In the Elite Women’s race, María López Faraudo of Mexico produced a strong run to take victory in 58:22, narrowly ahead of Great Britain’s Katie Rodda, with Germany’s Carlotta Büick completing the podium.
The race began with a 750m swim in the River Foyle before athletes tackled the multi-lap bike course along the quays and a 5km run finishing across the Peace Bridge and into Ebrington Square.
Conditions in the River Foyle later meant the Elite Men’s race was changed to a duathlon. After close racing through the opening run and bike sections, Switzerland’s Maxime Fluri broke clear during the final 5km run to take the win ahead of Great Britain’s Hamish Reilly and France’s Etienne Le Roux.
A Full Day of Triathlon
Alongside the international fields, the sold-out Triathlon National Series race brought Age Group athletes to Derry for their own opportunity to race through the city.
Bringing Age Group, Junior and Elite racing together on the same day created a unique programme and showcased Derry as a venue capable of hosting triathlon at every level.
The event was made possible by the athletes, technical teams, event partners and the many volunteers who gave their time throughout race weekend — as well as the crowds who came out across the course to support the racing.
