Introduction

Race through the heart of Derry~Londonderry on a course that has already proven itself as one of the most memorable triathlon venues in Ireland.

The City of Derry Triathlon brings athletes into the River Foyle, across the city’s iconic bridges, and through its historic riverfront streets — combining fast racing with a unique urban atmosphere.

This Triathlon Ireland National Series sprint event welcomes athletes from across Ireland and beyond to compete on a compact, spectator-friendly course designed to showcase the achievements of age group triathletes in the city at their absolute best.

The Course

The course delivers fast racing, minimal congestion, and excellent close viewing opportunities for supporters throughout the event.

Swim – River Foyle

The race begins with an open-water swim in the River Foyle, near the marina area at Queen’s Quay.

Athletes will complete a 750m swim at slack water within a clearly defined tidal window and will be supported by a comprehensive water safety operation in accordance with World Triathlon requirements.

Bike – City Circuit

The bike leg consists of two laps of a closed-road city circuit, giving athletes the opportunity to settle into rhythm while taking in some of the city’s most spectacular views and iconic riverfront sites.

The 20km course includes long, flowing sections on wide roads and more challenging technical sections, passing key city landmarks.

Run – Riverfront

The run brings athletes into the heart of the city’s festival of triathlon atmosphere, centered around Queens Quay, the Peace Bridge, St Columb’s Park, and Ebrington Square. The 5km sprint run follows a largely flat, scenic riverside route, crossing the city’s iconic Peace Bridge and finishing with a party atmosphere in historic Ebrington Square.

Event Delivery & Safety

This Triathlon Ireland National Series event is delivered by North West Triathlon Club which has 40 years plus experience in hosting safe, well-organised endurance events in the city.

Course planning and delivery are supported by extensive local knowledge and tested preparation. From strict water testing protocols to traffic management planning, to course-wide marshalling to the highest standard and fully liaising with Derry City & Strabane District Council’s (DCSDC) Safety Advisory Group, every effort has been made to ensure a safe and enjoyable race for all competitors, supporters, spectators, race teams, and the general public.

Triathlon Ireland Membership:A Triathlon Ireland Full Membership or a Triathlon Ireland One Day Membership (available here) is required to race in this event.

Participants may race under a licence granted by a federation other than Triathlon Ireland, although Triathlon National Series points will not be awarded. A Triathlon Ireland Full membership is required to earn Triathlon National Series Points.

The race is scheduled at slack water as the tide begins to come in, aiming, aiming to provide controlled conditions with minimal chop while still delivering an authentic and fast open-water swim experience.
