Confirmation that Derry~Londonderry will host the Europe Triathlon Cup on Saturday 5 September 2026 marks a significant milestone for the City of Derry Triathlon and for sport in the North West.
For Race Director Laura Colhoun, the award represents more than a calendar addition — it reflects international confidence in the city’s ability to stage elite competition within a compact, city-centre setting.
“Being awarded the Europe Triathlon Cup reflects the confidence Europe Triathlon has in our city and its ability to host international-standard racing. Bringing elite and age-group competition together on the same day will create a distinctive race-day atmosphere and showcase the strengths of our compact, riverside city-centre venue.”
The 2026 event will feature four elite races — Senior Elite Open, Senior Elite Female, Junior Elite Open, and Junior Elite Female — bringing more than 200 international triathletes to compete in the heart of the city.
“Taking in the quays along the River Foyle, the Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square, the races will create an immersive viewing experience rarely achieved in larger, more spread-out venues.”
The Europe Triathlon Cup races will be staged alongside the Triathlon Ireland National Series Age Group race on the same day, integrating elite international competition with national participation racing in one continuous programme.
Laura believes this format is central to what makes the City of Derry Triathlon distinctive.
“Bringing international elite racing and national age-group competition together within one compact city-centre footprint creates energy throughout the course and makes the city centre part of the occasion.”
The City of Derry Triathlon race week programme will also include official athlete briefings, familiarisation sessions, medal ceremonies and podium presentations, ensuring a professional environment for international competitors while maintaining accessibility for the local community.
The Europe Triathlon Cup forms the centrepiece of the wider City of Derry Triathlon Weekend, which will conclude on Sunday 6 September with the annual Waterside Half Marathon — creating a landmark sporting weekend for the city in 2026.
For Laura, the award to her hometown also highlights the strength of collaboration behind the event which is supported and funded by Derry City and Strabane District Council, Triathlon Ireland and corporate sponsors The AMP, Grofuse Digital, and Connected Health.
“Delivering an event of this scale requires alignment between local organisers, national governing bodies and our city partners. This award recognises the professionalism of that partnership and the capability that exists here in Derry,” she says.
With its riverside setting, compact layout, and established National Series presence, the City of Derry Triathlon has built a reputation as one of the standout races on the domestic calendar. Its elevation to Europe Triathlon Cup status signals the next stage in its development.
As preparations begin for September 2026, Laura emphasises that the focus remains on delivering a high-quality experience for athletes, officials and spectators alike.
“Our priority is to ensure that athletes — whether they are competing in an elite field or in the age-group race — experience a professionally delivered and safe event in a city that embraces them. The Europe Triathlon Cup provides an opportunity to showcase Derry on an international stage, and we intend to deliver an event that reflects that standard.”
