World Triathlon and Team Ireland international Luke McCarron has described the 2026 Europe Triathlon Cup in Derry as a landmark moment for the city’s triathlon community.
“Racing a European Cup in Derry was something I couldn’t have dreamt of when I did my first couple of sessions with North West Triathlon Club (NWTC).”
Luke began his triathlon journey with NWTC as a schoolboy and now races on the international triathlon circuit.
The local athlete said the triathlon club’s members have “worked tirelessly to build something really special” over many years.
And as a native of the city, for Luke the return of elite triathlon racing is particularly meaningful.
“This race is a testament to the triathlon legacy that has been created by those people. We are ready to cement Derry’s reputation on the world triathlon stage.”
The 2026 event will feature Senior and Junior Elite fields alongside the Triathlon Ireland National Series Age Group race, bringing international and national competition together within the city-centre venue at Ebrington Square and the River Foyle.
The Europe Triathlon Cup status underscores the city’s continued development as a host location for international triathlon competition.
